How much marketing costs a small business each month
Marketing a small business costs anywhere from $0 to $15,000 a month, and the honest middle for an owner who hires help is $1,500 to $5,000 a month. That covers a freelancer or two, a little ad spend, and the fee to manage it.
I want you to see that range as four different businesses, not one scale. At a few hundred dollars you're buying advice and doing the work yourself. At a few thousand you're buying hours from people who do it for you. Past $5,000 you're buying someone to decide what gets done.
Choose the band you can afford for twelve months, not the one you can afford this month. Marketing that stops in month three wastes most of what you spent in months one and two.
The table below shows what each band buys, who does the work, and a real mix priced from published rates.
What each monthly marketing budget buys
Small business marketing budget bands by month, 2026
| Monthly budget | Example mix |
|---|---|
| $0–$500 | 2 hours with a marketing consultant at $150 = $300 |
| $500–$1,500 | Local SEO at $300 + 12 social posts at $800 = $1,100 |
| $1,500–$5,000 | $1,000 ad spend + $500 minimum ads management fee + $300 local SEO + $800 social = $2,600 |
| $5,000–$15,000 | Fractional CMO $5,000 + $3,000 ad spend + $750 flat-fee ads management + $1,500 SEO + $1,500 copy = $11,750 |
Example mixes use the low end of ranges published on WhatShouldICharge: marketing consultant median $150 an hour, local SEO $300–$1,500 a month, small-business SEO retainer $1,500–$4,000, 12 social posts $800–$2,000, Google Ads management minimum fee $500–$1,500 or a $750–$1,500 single-platform flat fee, copy retainers $1,500–$6,000, fractional CMO $5,000–$15,000. Ad spend figures are example inputs.
A $1,100 month buys two channels done well: a local SEO retainer at the $300 floor and 12 social posts at the $800 floor. That's the band I'd point most first-time buyers toward, because one freelancer per channel is easy to judge.
Every example mix above uses the bottom of a published range on purpose. Quotes above the floor aren't wrong, they're buying more hours or a more senior person, and the SEO consultant rate calculator and the social media manager rate calculator show what those hours should cost where you live.
Don't spread $1,500 across five channels. Each one gets $300, and $300 buys about 2 hours from a marketing consultant at the $150 median. Nothing works on two hours.
The moment a mix includes ads, you're paying for two separate things, and that split deserves its own look.
Ad spend vs management fee: the two costs of paid marketing
Paid ads cost you twice: the ad spend you pay the platform, plus a management fee, which for Google Ads runs 15% to 20% of spend under $10,000 a month with a $500 to $1,500 minimum, or $500 to $2,500 a month to manage a single account.
The spend goes straight to the platform. Google Ads Help explains that advertisers choose an average daily budget for each campaign, so you set that number, not the person managing it.
The percentage drops as spend rises: 10% to 15% from $10,000 to $50,000 a month, and 5% to 10% above $50,000. The minimum is where small budgets get squeezed. On $2,000 of monthly spend, 15% to 20% is only $300 to $400, so the $500 to $1,500 minimum kicks in. Your real cost is $2,500 to $3,500 a month, and the fee is 25% to 75% of what you spend on ads.
On $20,000 of spend, 10% to 15% comes to $2,000 to $3,000, for a total of $22,000 to $23,000. The fee drops to a normal share once the spend is big enough to carry it.
While your spend sits in the low thousands, ask whether a flat single-account fee comes in under the minimum, or learn to run one campaign yourself. Social ads carry the same two-part cost, since a social media manager charges for ad management on top of posting, as the social media manager cost guide lays out.
Who collects that fee, and who does the rest of the work, changes your monthly bill more than any channel choice.
In-house marketer vs freelancer vs agency vs fractional CMO: the real monthly cost
Who does your marketing, and what it costs a month
| Option | Monthly cost |
|---|---|
| Freelancer, 20 hours | $1,000–$4,000 |
| SEO agency | $3,209 average |
| Marketing consultant retainer | $3,000–$15,000 |
| Fractional CMO | $5,000–$15,000 |
| In-house marketing specialist | $8,467 |
| In-house marketing manager | $17,930 |
BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025 medians; BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026 (benefits beyond paid leave add 29%); Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers; WhatShouldICharge freelance rates and published consultant ranges.
A full-time marketing specialist costs you about $8,467 a month, while 20 freelance hours cost $1,000 to $4,000 and a fractional CMO costs $5,000 to $15,000.
The employee number surprises people, so here's the math. BLS wage data for marketing specialists puts the May 2025 median at $78,760 a year. BLS employer cost data shows benefits beyond paid leave add about 29%, so $78,760 × 1.29 = $101,600 a year, or $8,467 a month. A marketing manager at the BLS median of $166,790 becomes $166,790 × 1.29 = $215,159 a year, or $17,930 a month.
And neither of them comes with an ad budget.
Freelancers are the cheapest way to buy hours. At WhatShouldICharge rates of $50 (an entry social media manager) to $200 (a premium SEO consultant), 20 hours comes to $1,000 to $4,000. The catch is that you become the manager, and the SEO cost guide shows how fast those hours add up once a channel gets competitive.
Agencies cost more for the same channel. An Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers found agencies averaged $3,209 a month against $1,349 for freelancers. You're paying for a team and account management, which is worth it only when the work needs several people at once.
A fractional CMO sits in between. At the $150 median consultant rate, a $5,000 retainer buys about 33 hours a month of senior judgment, and the marketing consultant rate calculator shows where that rate lands for your metro. My advice: hire the thinking part-time and the doing by the hour until the budget clears $15,000.
Knowing what each option costs only helps once you know how much you need to spend.
How to work out your monthly marketing budget in dollars
Work out your monthly marketing budget from the work, not a wish: list the hours each channel needs, multiply by the rate, then add ad spend and fees. For example, 12 hours of SEO at $125 is $1,500, and 8 hours of social at $85 is $680, so $2,180 of work.
Add $1,000 of ad spend and a $500 management fee, the low end of the $500 to $1,500 minimum, and your month comes to $2,180 + $1,000 + $500 = $3,680. That's a number you can take to three freelancers and compare line by line.
The SBA's marketing and sales guide tells you to break down every cost in your marketing plan, and this is what that looks like in practice.
Then check it against what a customer is worth. If one new customer brings you $2,000 in profit and your $3,680 month wins you 2, you've paid $1,840 for each one. That's close to break-even, and I'd want more room. When a proposal lands, the project hours estimator turns its scope into hours you can check, so you can see whether the provider priced honest hours.
If you'd rather start from a share of sales, I've written up what percentage of revenue to spend on marketing as a separate guide. And if you're still choosing which channel to buy first, start with how to market your business.
A budget built from hours is also the easiest one to trim, which matters the month cash gets tight.

Marketing Consultant Rate CalculatorWhat to cut first when your marketing money is tight
Cut ad spend and its management fee first: pausing $1,000 of spend and a $500 fee saves $1,500 a month, or $18,000 a year, and nothing you built disappears.
Big companies reach for marketing first too. In the 2026 CMO Survey, 53.1% of companies focused on cutting expenses when profits fell short, and marketing was cut 45.4% of the time over other expense categories.
Here's the order I'd cut in. Ads go first, because they stop working the day you stop paying and restart the day you pay again. The strategy layer goes second: a $5,000 fractional CMO can pause for a quarter if the plan is already written. Social posting drops to a lower tier, from 20 posts to 12.
Keep what compounds. Your SEO work, your Google Business Profile, and emails to people who already bought from you keep earning after you stop paying for new work. Protect those last.
The cuts that hurt most are the ones you never saw coming, because they weren't on the budget at all.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost for a small business to advertise?
Advertising costs the ad spend you choose plus a management fee. For Google Ads that's 15% to 20% of spend under $10,000 a month with a $500 to $1,500 minimum, or $500 to $2,500 a month for a single account. On $2,000 of spend, expect $2,500 to $3,500.
How much does business marketing cost?
Business marketing costs a small business $0 to $180,000 a year, which is the $0 to $15,000 monthly range times 12. A two-channel freelancer mix at $1,100 a month is $13,200 a year, and a mix with a small ads test at $2,600 a month is $31,200.
How much should a small business pay for marketing?
Pay what the work needs: hours times rate, plus ad spend. Twelve hours of SEO at $125 and 8 hours of social at $85 come to $2,180, and adding $1,000 of spend and a $500 fee makes $3,680 a month.
How much does marketing cost per month?
Marketing costs $0 to $500 a month when you do the work with a paid hour or two of advice, $500 to $1,500 for one or two channels from freelancers, $1,500 to $5,000 to add a small ads test, and $5,000 to $15,000 with a fractional CMO leading.
I've spent seven years pricing and buying these services as Group Head of SEO, Content and Growth at Schbang, where I built a two-person pilot into a thirty-person team serving brands including UltraTech Cement, Motorola and Tata Communications. In the $1,500 to $5,000 band, buyers tend to buy breadth before depth. They split the money across every channel they've heard of, so no freelancer gets enough hours to show what works. I'd rather see $1,100 a month go into two channels for six months, $6,600 in total, than $2,600 a month go into three channels plus ad spend for two months, $5,200, which ends before any channel can prove itself.
